Reduction of spectral phonon relaxation times from suspended to supported graphene

چکیده
We have performed molecular dynamics simulations with phonon spectral analysis to predict the mode-wise phonon relaxation times (RT) of suspended and supported graphene at room temperature, and the findings are consistent with recent optical measurements. For acoustic phonons, RTs reduce from up to 50 ps to less than 5 ps when graphene is put on silicon dioxide substrate. Similarly, optical phonon RTs reduce by half when supported. Stronger interfacial bonding is found to result in more RT reduction. Our results provide a fundamental understanding at the spectral phonon property level for the observed thermal conductivity reduction in supported graphene. VC 2012 American Institute of Physics. Studies of intrinsic hot phonon dynamics in suspended graphene by transient absorption microscopy.
Correlated transient absorption and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements have been performed for monolayer graphene, both free-standing and supported on a glass substrate. The AFM images allow us to locate regions of the suspended graphene. The transient absorption traces show a fast instrument response limited decay, followed by a slower intensity dependent decay. The fast decay is assig...
متن کاملThermal transport in graphene
of phonon transport in graphene is discussed along with associated experimental and theoretical investigation techniques. Several theories and experiments have suggested that the absence of interlayer phonon scattering in suspended monolayer graphene can result in higher intrinsic basal plane thermal conductivity than that for graphite. However, accurate experimental thermal conductivity data o...
متن کاملHexagonal boron nitride: a promising substrate for graphene with high heat dissipation.
Supported graphene on a standard SiO2 substrate exhibits unsatisfactory heat dissipation performance that is far inferior to the intrinsic ultrahigh thermal conductivity of a suspended sample. A suitable substrate for enhancing thermal transport in supported graphene is highly desirable for the development of graphene devices for thermal management. By using molecular dynamics simulations, here...
متن کاملSpectral phonon thermal properties in graphene nanoribbons
This work provides a comprehensive investigation on the spectral phonon properties in graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) by the normal mode decomposition (NMD) method, considering the effects of edge chirality, width, and temperature. We find that the edge chirality has no significant effect on the phonon relaxation time but has a large influence to the phonon group velocity. As a result, the thermal ...
متن کاملRippling ultrafast dynamics of suspended 2D monolayers, graphene.
Here, using ultrafast electron crystallography (UEC), we report the observation of rippling dynamics in suspended monolayer graphene, the prototypical and most-studied 2D material. The high scattering cross-section for electron/matter interaction, the atomic-scale spatial resolution, and the ultrafast temporal resolution of UEC represent the key elements that make this technique a unique tool f...
